NEWSWEEK – Listman was 19 at the time and writes that the squeeze “was a calculated act and worse than you think,” saying that she dressed conservatively and looked young for her age, believing Wiesel mistook her for an “ultra-religious underage girl who was unlikely to tell anyone” about the assault.

“In other words, he purposefully chose to molest someone who he assumed was a minor and who would be compelled into silence,” she wrote. CONTINUE READING

  1. Yeah, alright, he put his hand on your arse and that’s bad news but “she struggled with “anxiety, panic attacks and suicidal depression” as she kept the story inside (for fear of)…spark(ing) anti-Semitism”. Sure. Many people have suffered real trauma and never had those kinds of reactions. And, by all means, let’s toss in the “anti-Semitism card for good measure”. 😢

  2. I would say EVERY woman who EVERY lived has an “unwanted grope” story. Not every one of us was so terribly traumatized. Scuzzbucket that he was, the weasel is dead and this stupid story serves no purpose really.

  3. It happens all the time. Does it make it right? No. But it still happens all the time. I will say that older men WILL often molest a younger female (or male) because they’re intimidated by the age difference and shocked and usually unable to say anything to anyone. I only told my family after decades had passed (and I could sort of chuckle about it) about a time DURING A PAPAL AUDIENCE in Rome in that large hall in the Vatican with hundreds of people in attendance. We were packed in like sardines and trying to peer over the people in front of us. Montini was Pope then. It was 1973. I was a young teenager. Some really old man proceeded to do the same to me as was done to Listman, except that it lasted on and off for the duration of the audience. I tried to squirm my way away from this old fool, but there was little wiggle room to be had. My sister was with me. I didn’t even say a word to her at the time. What bothered me most I think was that other people must have seen what he was doing but no older person said a word to this creep. I wish I had had the fortitude to jam my elbow into his stomach, or step on his feet and break one of his toes, or even turn around and slap him hard in the face, but I was a kid from NY and we were in Rome seeing the Pope.
