Mother of baby killed in Duma attack is clinically dead

Al-Jazeera cites family sources as saying Riham Dawabsha’s condition has further deteriorated

The Palestinian woman critically injured in a firebombing attack in July is now “clinically dead,” family members have told the Al-Jazeera network, Channel 10 television’s website said Sunday.

Riham Dawabsha, 26, sustained third-degree burns on 90 percent of her body and was left fighting for her life when suspected Jewish terrorists hurled a firebomb through the window of the family home in the West Bank city of Duma on July 31, killing her 18-month-old son Ali. Her husband, Saad, was also critically wounded and died days later. The family’s other son, 5-year-old Ahmed, is being treated at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer for massive burns all over his body.

Ahmed’s condition has improved, and he has been seen on Israeli TV speaking and eating, and asking about his parents.

On Saturday, doctors at Sheba told relatives of Riham Dawabsha that her condition had deteriorated sharply and that she may not survive the next 24 hours.

The terror attack on July 31 shook Israeli society.

Israeli politicians roundly condemned the attack but some opposition MKs from left-wing parties accused right-wing lawmakers and the government of creating the public atmosphere that prepared the ground for the attack. President Reuven Rivlin said Israel had been lax in fighting Jewish terrorism.

In the wake of the attack, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon approved the use of administrative detention for Jewish terror suspects, a form of arrest without charges. The tactic is often used against Palestinian terror suspects.

Several such arrests of right-wing activists have been made but none has been linked directly to the attack in Duma.

Ya’alon has said the use of administrative detention for a number of Jewish terror suspects has proved effective in preventing additional violence against Arabs by hardline Jews.
