I remember seeing a documentary about salt miners somewhere in the Sahara I think it was. Long back-breaking sweltering hours cutting and digging out heavy slabs of salt. The slabs of salt were loaded onto caravans of camels which carried the slabs through long distances to the nearest commercial hub where the slabs were exchanged for money.
