Convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard has been freed after three decades behind bars in an espionage saga that shook the alliance between the US and Israel.
The former US Navy intelligence officer was freed on Friday morning from a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina.
The terms of the 61-year-old’s parole require him to remain in the US for at least five years.
Within hours of his release, Pollard’s lawyers filed court papers in New York City challenging the “onerous and oppressive” conditions.
Pollard and his wife, Elaine, were seen checking in at a Manhattan probation office.
He is required to wear a GPS ankle bracelet and submit to inspections of his computer at home and work.
Pollard’s attorneys say he has a job waiting for him in the finance department of a New York investment firm.
Israel admitted in the 1990s Pollard had been its agent.
His legal team says a GPS monitor would be harmful to his health because he has severe diabetes.
They also argue the computer monitoring is unnecessary as he was no longer in possession of any government secrets.
Pollard’s supporters – including some US lawmakers – want him to be allowed to move to Israel immediately.
Pollard was held at a federal prison in Butner, North Carolina.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who lobbied US officials on Pollard’s behalf, welcomed his release.
“After three long and difficult decades Jonathan is at last reunited with his family,” he said.
Pollard was handed a life sentence for providing large amounts of classified US government information to Israel.

He was arrested on 21 November 1985, after trying unsuccessfully to gain asylum at the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
Pollard’s supervisor had become suspicious of him after noticing he was handling large amounts of classified materials unrelated to his official duties.
He pleaded guilty in 1986 to conspiracy to commit espionage and was given a life sentence a year later.

According to the terms of his parole he is not supposed to leave the US for 5 years unless … he gets presidential “clemency.” Anyone willing to bet against me that Obama will give him that clemency as son as the rat is done celebrating his release with his admirers in the US and is ready to go to Israel? I bet $1,000 that he receives a hero’s welcome in Israel in less than two months.
Ariad the laws in New York gives Pollard’s probation officer the authority to release him as they see fit. No need for presidential clemency. I doubt that Obama will have to get involved. There is no justice.

Since he’s been in prison for the last 30 years, he obviously doesn’t have any recent experience in finance. There are tens of millions of people with degrees looking for work, and some with experience that can’t find work and this Jewish jailbird has a job waiting for him after getting out of jail.
It is a definite advantage to be a Jew in today’s world (yesterdays too). Jews stick together and help their own. Its time others notice this and exclude them the way they exclude others. Since they make up 2% of the American population the other 98% would be able to exclude a lot of Jews.
Pollard looks a lot like Theodore Kaufman, the would be mass sterilizer of Germans. I wonder if they’re related.

Pollard should be hung. In the US some Jews were sentenced to death for the same reason.
@lasilencia: as far as I knew he was in a FEDERAL prison, which–irrespective of its location– is under federal not state authority. Clemency was cited as the only way to turn his parole into a definitive release.

Ariad, I live in New York and have worked in the legal field for many years. I am very familiar with its laws. If the probation officer wishes to recommend that Pollard be released from probation, it is his duty to do so, and the recommendation will be reviewed. I am not defending Pollard, just stating facts. He was in prison out of state and his records were transferred over to NY. They could have kept him in North Carolina, but instead released in NY for reasons only his lawyer is allow to say and those familiar with the case. He is on probation and free and must report to his parole officer. No need to CAP the word federal as if I did not know what I am talking about. You don’t live here. Once an individual is out on probation, they are free with limitations but it is not necessary to be on parole for the full duration, if the parole officer feels differently, whether the crime is a felony or misdemeanor.

Everyone is so absorbed and wrapped up with ISIS (rightly so, they too are backed to the hilt by Israel and the Mossad) this story barely registers a blink with the general “masses”.
