Last night I watched a sappy sentimental Christmas movie loosely based on A Christmas Carol. It was bad but I just mindlessly watched it as I mused Mark’s latest programme. It was all very Christmassy of course, but I snapped to attention at the end.
The main character, after all those revelations finally realizes that she has never said “Merry Christmas” to anyone and then the phone rings. In a wonder of excitement she answers the phone and says, “Merry Christmas!” then looks a tad crestfallen for a flash and responds with, “Well Happy Hannukah, then!” and the story moves on.
WTF I thought? There was no mention of Hannukah in Dicken’s original writing and certainly no point in inserting that into the story line unless some Jewish writer just had to get his digs in. Suddenly my kind of sappy mood disintegrated and I was ticked off. It was like a dollop of wiggling maggots dropped into a nice boozy desert.
It was also watching, however short the transition was, this sparkling person quickly doused and apologizing, to the Jew. The symbolism was not lost on me.
THEY HAVE TO BE IN EVERYTHING. Maybe it is because without US they cannot exist.
