Abbas possibly half right. Do we know for a fact that the original Canaanites were Semites or another language group?. We do know that around the time of Christ in Palestine you had Jews and pagans (both Greeks and Syro-Phoenician) and of course the Samaritans. After the temple was destroyed by the Romans and further Jewish uprisings afterward, there were hardly any Jews left in Palestine. They were either killed or fled to the Diaspora. By AD 250 or so, I would say that most or at least a large part of the Greek speaking and maybe a large part of the Aramaic speaking (non-Jewish) population became Christian. In 632 Muslim armies came up from Arabia and conquered Jerusalem and Palestine from the Byzantines. Over time many of the Christians became Muslim and most likely mixed with those who had come up from Arabia. We can definitely say that the ancestors of a good portion of Palestinian Arabs were there in Palestine from the Roman period. As far as the Canaanites are concerned – too far back historically to give a definite answer. But we all know what point Abbas is trying to makie.

One must remember that, if you believe Israel existed i.e. Phoenican/Canaanite proto and semitic period, that the schism of 931 BC separated Samaria (Israel – 9 tribes) and Judah (Judah and Benjamin). The Jews know perfectly well that the Palestinians were the indigenes of Palestine (now occupied Palestein) when they rolled up in 1948. They know too that Palestein had been continuously occupied since the time of Christ. They know too that in all likelihood, the Palestinians are simply those Jews who remained in Palestein after the Romans destroyed the temple at Jerusalem in 70 AD, and converted ultimately to Christianity or Islam.
In fact most Jews of the era converted to Christianity … and became the original Christians.
