We have become a very sick society when they show the military embracing their young ones as a surprise in a school room. Or other places without thinking that maybe other children are watching who will never embrace their parent again. To me this is very sad and in poor taste.

During WW-2 American snipers deliberately targeted German medical personell on the battle field; apparently in the American military, snipers were (are) trained to be murderers. I wonder whether they undergo a psychological test to determine the degree of their psychopathic nature. When I was elected to become a helicopter pilot way back in 1963 in Ft. Irwin Ca, I underwent an incredible series of tests, both physical and mental to determine my mental & physical qualifications; that was before helicopter pilots were trained by the boat-load in order to be sacrificed in Vietnam. THOSE guys underwent less stringent training I have been told. The concept of the sniper is ancient (in the middle ages they were armed with cross-bows) and has nothing to do with murder; The idea is, for a highly trained shooter to scour the enemy lines and to pick off the enemy´s leaders – officers (the higher the rank, the better) or top-flight non-commissioned officers. Many a soldier was in the cross-hairs of a sniper and got away unscathed, simply because he wasn´t important. Neither Japanese nor German snipers killed helter-skelter – ONLY when the bullet counted. Since every side had snipers, a sniper after shooting changed positions at once in order to avoid being picked off by the opposing snipers! In the German Wehrmacht each sniper had an assistent who kept meticulous track of the sniper´s activities and `success´- rate. The VAST majority of the snipers were killed during battle, only a handful survived. The most successful sniper in German history was Bruno Sutkus; within a 6-months period he achieved 209 documented hits and numerous others which were not verified due to his assistent having been killed during action. He was German – Lithuanian, spoke fluent Russian and survived due to his linguistic abilities and due to his faithful, much older wife with whom he was banished to Siberia into an area in which most inmates died like flies. Had the Soviets known his true identity he would have been executed after arrest. After his release by the Soviets, he taught part-time at the Military Academy of Lithuania. Gerry Frederics
