“We American Jews remember Pollard as someone who violated our values and our trust. We will not defend him; he does not deserve it.”

HAARETZ

Leave Jonathan Pollard alone. With his release imminent, that is my advice to American Jews—and American Jewish organizations—soon to confront the reality of Pollard living in their midst, probably in the New York City area.

No grand celebrations. No dinners in his honor. No major communal embrace. No hero’s welcome.

Mr. Pollard and his wife are entitled to their privacy. They will want to get their lives in order, and they should be given the space to do so. If individuals choose to visit them, fine, and the Pollards will be free to receive them if they so choose.

Still, the real question here is the collective response of the American Jewish community to Mr. Pollard. And the fact is that he should not be welcomed as a hero because he is not a hero. And we should not treat him as one.

The Pollard affair will be remembered as a shameful episode in Israel’s history. Since his apprehension more than 30 years ago, Pollard has been eccentric, erratic, and seemingly unstable. Israeli intelligence agents made the colossal mistake of paying this individual money to spy for the Jewish state. Pollard’s actions violated the law and had the potential to undermine American security; whether they did, or the extent to which they did, remains unclear.

But what is crystal clear is that this affair was injurious to Israel’s well-being. American Jews are fully aware of just how foolish and destructive Pollard’s Israeli handlers were. These handlers both took advantage of a problematic individual and acted in a way that might have seriously compromised Israel’s relations with her most important ally.

Despite their revulsion at Pollard’s crimes, American Jews eventually came together in calling for his release, especially once he became eligible for parole. They noted that Pollard was ill; that he had served much longer in prison than others who had committed comparable crimes; that he had eventually expressed remorse; and that he had been acting on behalf of an ally and not an enemy state.

Some Jews tried to claim that a massive anti-Semitic conspiracy kept Pollard behind bars, but this is absurd. Nonetheless, it did become apparent that the personal vindictiveness of Caspar Weinberger toward Israel was a factor in the harsh sentence that Pollard received. And this helped to convince both Jewish and non-Jewish leaders to appeal for Pollard’s release.

In a brief private conversation with President Barack Obama in 2011, I asked the President to take another look at the Pollard question. And in that same year I participated in a much longer meeting of a half dozen Jewish leaders with Vice President Joe Biden, appealing to him to help us on the Pollard question. Biden has impeccable pro-Israel credentials, and the meeting was friendly. The Vice President listened carefully to our concerns. But it was not a one-way meeting, and we heard the considerations that were guiding the government. While I did not agree with a great deal of what was said, I left with a much better sense of why five administrations, Republican and Democratic, had resisted calls for clemency.

Still, all of this is now history. The long-awaited release is about to happen, and the key is to deal with it in a way that reflects what most American Jews are now feeling: unequivocal condemnation of Pollard’s crimes and compassion for the broken man who committed them.

In a bit of an ironic twist, Pollard is being released at a moment when the American people, never very favorable to Pollard, are likely to be even less so. The terrorism in Europe has led to calls for increased intelligence gathering so that terror might be combatted more effectively. Under these circumstances, Americans will hardly be sympathetic to an American citizen who accepted money for passing sensitive intelligence information to a foreign government, even if that government was, and is, an ally.

This is yet another reason why the Jewish community should not glorify Pollard. It is also a reason why, in the unlikely event that Pollard should be allowed to go to Israel immediately, the government of Israel should act with discretion and follow our lead.

Still, American Jews have no need to check the opinion polls. We remember Pollard as someone who violated our values and our trust. We will not defend him; he does not deserve it. Nonetheless, he has paid for his crimes, and he is entitled to live his life in peace. In other words, this is a time for American Jews to demonstrate some respectful silence and restraint.

  1. Pollard and the Jewish state of Israel are NOT entitled to any peace over this. They both have broken the law and the trust of the USA.
The Israeli agenda comes first according to them.
Both Israel and Pollard deserve what they are getting. Shame and scorn. Just like Ben Grun deserved when he was involved in Dimona. Israel first.
The USS Liberty, JFK, 911…. And the continuing traitors and liars. They deserve nothing more than shame and scorn.

  2. A bullshit, hasbara article. The only reason the jews aren’t jumping for joy is because they know it would only backfire! It would create revulsion for them, even from brain washed Americans. It would flagrantly expose their true colors. You know his new “employers” are jews! They’ll probably pay him to sit around watching reruns of Israeli TV shows.

I suppose Pollard will have a NYC police detail always near, lest he gets stabbed to death!

It’s not “unclear” what this jew traitor did! He compromised US foreign agents, some of whom were killed. Israel gave his info on how we tracked Soviet subs to the Soviets in exchange for some jew scientists. He gave up the 10 volumes of signal intel (RASIN) that had taken years to acquire. He gave up our satellite capabilities info. And much, much more. The documents he handed over to his scum jew pals during his 10 years as a traitor would create a stack of paper 6′ square x 10′ tall.

He was a coke-head who collected over $500,000 from the Zionist maggots occupying Palestine.

He should’ve been shot, cremated, his ashes mixed with pig feed and the ensuing pig shit sent to Israel in a box with his name on it!

Why has Israel not been nuked?? Because they use Palestinians as human shields! Let’s evacuate the Palestinians, so that only jews are left….

  3. This article is for the Tea Party, Evangelical Jew apologists, and there unwittingly stupid ” Liberal ” ,Allies, to wave in the face of any ” Anti Semites “.
I know all of the Jews formula tricks….” By deception Thou shall do war”.

Every major spy in US history was a JEW….OK.
No people ever produced so many !

Harry Dexter White, Silvermaster,( Hiss was not ), Harry Hopkins and more….the Rosenbergs, the granddaddy till Pollard.

Of course all of this was denied as ” McCarthyism “.
Nooooo, dear good people. IT IS JUDIASM.

  4. Here I blame the silence of the American people… This is an insult to this country and people are still silent… Do they know Jews and Israel are controlling their country?

I am sure it could be much harsher penalty & longer imprisonment if a Russian, Iranian or any other foreigner had been arrested for espionage… This is an insult to American people but either they don’t care or are completely brainwashed…

  5. This article is one of the — if not THE — best article I have ever read that exemplifies the Jewish art of deceit, perfected for hundreds of years of living among non-Jews as a hostile, self-serving, traitorous, alien in-group, using mimetism as a tactic of dissimulation.

The rabbi, as a representative of the most ruthless and vengeful religious ideology, appeals to the Christian spirit of forgiveness of the non-Jews, pretending to share it.

The rabbi, as a representative of the much-vaunted scholarly wisdom of Judaism, takes a trenchant, black and white case of outrageous betrayal and minimizes it pretending that (1) the consequences of Pollard actions are “unclear” and that (2) a hostile act by an “ally” is not as serious as that committed by an enemy, when in fact common sense dictates that the opposite is true.

With blatant hypocrisy he pretends that urging Jews to tone down their celebrations of the traitor’s release (“respectful silence and restraint”) is motivated by the desire to give him and his family “privacy” rather than to avoid drawing the attention of non-Jews to the scandalous jubilation of the hostile in-group.

The claim that “most American Jews are now feeling: unequivocal condemnation of Pollard’s crimes and compassion for the broken man who committed them” is another blatant lie meant to. Unequivocal condemnation is not compatible with demanding his release and compassion for a “broken man” who committed crimes (that led to the death of many American agents) is NEVER in evidence among Jews vis-a-vis any Palestinians imprisoned by Israel on real or concocted accusations. Compassion is indeed alien to the entire spirit of Judaism.
If an eye for an eye were to be applied to Pollard he should have been tortured and executed scores of times.

This article should nor be dismissed as run of the mill hasbara. Instead it should be studied as a blueprint of judaic instructions to the Jews on how to behave among non-Jews to maximize their the success of their nefarious deceit.

  6. Excellent comment, ariadnatheo. The common thread is the absolute importance of honesty, and the unrivalled skill of the Jews in the art of dishonesty. If Christianity, Islam, or any gentile group, want to defend themselves against the Judaic war being waged against them, they MUST practice HONESTY, and they must practice it absolutely.
If Christianity is a religion of compassion, it must stand up for compassion relentlessly! Whenever Israel is cruel or genocidal to Palestinians, a genuine religion of compassion would react implacably, and demand that the government of its society take appropriate action in support of the Palestinian victims.
I do believe in honesty and compassion, although am not a follower of any religion.
Nonetheless I am going to quote to Christians some Christian scripture, Matthew, 25, 40-46:
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”
Now, Christians: that message is unequivocal. Compassion is mandatory!
If you believe in that quote, you should be feeling ashamed and frightened.
Whenever you hear somebody using the phrase “Judeo-Christian values” know that you and your religion are being betrayed and mocked by a people who have no more compassion for you than they have for a Palestinian.
