Many People Only Go To Uman To Party, Cause Trouble And Commit Crimes, Labor Party MK Says

Member of Knesset Merav Michaeli, who heads the Labor Party’s Knesset faction, said over the weekend that some of the people who travel to the gravesite of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, located in Uman, Ukraine, to celebrate Rosh Hashana there do so for criminal and immoral purposes, not for holiness, Yeshiva World reported.
Michaeli reportedly criticized Uman’s city government of permitting the event to take place, even though “difficult and harsh events occur during that time.” She later made it clear that she was not referring to most of the people who go there to pray. “I obviously was not referring to the tens of thousands of people traveling to pray at the site, but there are those who travel to unload their burden (lifrok ol).” The phrase is a reference to the ol malchut shamayim (“yoke of the Kingdom of Heaven;” Torah and halakha, Orthodox Jewish law), that all Jews are supposed to carry.
Michaeli’s remarks angered Breslov hasidim and many other Orthodox Jews – even though what she said is empirically true.
For example, Member of Knesset Betzalel Smotrich of the right-wing Zionist Orthodox HaBayit HaYehudi Party reportedly sent a letter condemning Michaeli’s statements to the Labor Party’s chairman, Member of Knesset Yitzchak Herzog, who also heads the Knesset opposition to the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. HaBayit HaYehudi is part of Netanyahu’s governing coalition.
But there have been repeated incidents of drug smuggling, drug use, solicitation of prostitution, destruction of property, public intoxication and small-scale rioting (among other crimes) by hasidim in Uman over the years.
Michaeli made her remarks in relation to the scandal surrounding Member of Knesset Oren Hazan of Netanyahu’s ruling Likud Party. Hazan allegedly used illegal hard drugs, hired prostitutes for his friends, and committed other ethical and legal violations while on a trip to Bulgaria, where he used to run a casino. Hazan was a Deputy Speaker of Knesset until the exposé about that alleged illegal behavior was broadcast by Israel’s Channel 2 News last week. He denies any wrongdoing. Hazan’s father was a Likud MK before him.
