Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, warned on Friday that expansion of the Israel-Hamas war has become ‘inevitable’, AFP reported.
‘Due to the increasing intensity of the war against the civilian residents of Gaza, the expansion of the scope of the war has now become inevitable’, Amir-Abdollahian told his Qatari counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, in a phone call.
His comments were cited on the ministry’s website.
During the second week of the war against Hamas, which began on October 7, Iranian proxy Hezbollah and other groups in Lebanon began upping their attacks as well, targeting towns and military installments in northern Israel with rockets and anti-tank munitions. IDF forces have responded as needed.
A Wall Street Journal report after Hamas’ October 7 attack claimed that Iranian security officials helped plan the attack and gave the green light for the assault at a meeting in Beirut.
Iran’s Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has denied any Iranian involvement in the Hamas attack.
Nevertheless, Iranian officials have threatened Israel in recent weeks. Amir-Abdollahian previously warned Israel that Lebanese and Palestinian Arab terrorists had their ‘finger on the trigger’ to respond to an Israeli ground operation in the Gaza Strip.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi later said that Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza ‘may force everyone’ to act.
‘The crimes of the Zionist regime have crossed the red lines, and this may force everyone to take action,’ Raisi said on X, formerly Twitter, adding, ‘Washington asks us to not do anything, but they keep giving widespread support to Israel.’
