“If Washington gives the Mexican president a pat on the back, it will be a stab in the back for the Mexican movement for justice and transparency.”

  1. The ongoing protests in Mexico are like the “Occupy” movement in the USA, but ten times more vigorous, because the despair in Mexico is worse than in the USA.

And it isn’t limited to Mexico. Today people gathered outside the White House and outside Mexican consulates in twelve cities across the U.S. to protest Mexican President Peña Nieto’s visit to Obama.

On the surface the protests are against the US-sponsored “drug war” that has killed an average of 350 people a week, 52 weeks a year, for seven years and counting. I personally knew nine different people who were killed in Mexico. These were personal friends of mine, not mere acquaintances. Washington funnels billions to Mexican politicians and drug cartel leaders to keep the nightmare going.

The “war on drugs” is a class war, just like the “war on terror.” It is the violent imperialism of rich people against foreign nations, and against their own citizens. In Mexico the war of the 1% on the 99% has caused violence, corruption, poverty, and inequality to become intolerable for millions.

Mexico is not a primitive place in a distant continent. Parts of it are very cosmopolitan (e.g. Mexico City), and are more “hip” than most US cities. But young people have no jobs and no hope. The gap is massive between the 1% and 99%, and it becomes worse each day, just like everywhere else in the world.

The trigger for the current protests was a local’s government’s execution of 43 student teachers on 26 Sep 2014. This was near the city of Iguala in the Mexican state of Guerrero, about 70 miles from Mexico City, the national capitol.

The student teachers were adults, not college kids. They were protesting the fact that rich people, politicians, and their drug-lord-allies steal all the money that is supposed to go to schools. So the local mayor had his drug-lord henchmen assassinate the protesters.

Mexican politicians are corrupt at the national, state, and municipal levels. (Mexico has no counties.) It’s even worse in places like Honduras or Guatemala, but it’s always been horrible there. Mexicans are different. They think like gringos. Even their diet nowadays is very much like gringos’. For them the plunge into poverty has been shocking.

It started when NAFTA came into effect on 1 Jan 1994, and the poverty has accelerated ever since. The purpose of all “free trade agreements” is to widen the gap between the rich and the rest.

Young Mexicans are very angry that each day the Mexican government puts new restrictions on their social networking. So they too are involved. In large cities, Mexican kids are like kids everywhere else: they live on their tablet computers and “smart-phones.” They spend all day on Facebook and Twitter and so forth. And the government keeps interfering with their social networking.

President Nieto wants to create “silent zones” in which all cell phones, radio, Internet and TV are blacked out during social demonstrations, or any situation that rich people decide is a potential threat to their power and wealth (i.e. a “threat to national security”).

Nieto also wants to increase the power of Televisa, which is one of two TV networks in Mexico. Only medium and large-sized cities in Mexico have Internet, so most people get their news from the TV, which spews the exact same excrement as that spewed by the TV news in the USA.

It’s become so bad that President Nieto is in Washington to ask for more money and extra help from the USA to keep the peasants in their place.

  2. Keeping the M out of BRICS.

Mexico is an important neighbor and critical ally most Americans undervalue.
