JERUSALEM POST – Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Russia’s support for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on Friday and said he opposed any use of external force to try to end the Syrian civil war.

Putin showed no sign of wavering in his policy of trying to shield Assad from pressure from the West in a 4 1/2-year-old conflict that has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions.

“Our fear is that Syria could plunge into the same situation as Libya and Iraq,” Putin said in response to questions at Russia’s annual economic forum in St Petersburg. “We don’t want that … in Syria,” he said.

Putin said the US policy to counter Islamic State, which controls large areas of Iraq and Syria, had so far had “lamentable” and “tragic” consequences.

“The United States supports Iraq [and its army]. With two or three strikes IS has captured so many arms … [that] now IS is armed better than the Iraqi army. And all this is happening with the support of the United States,” he said.

Washington has backed rebels seeking to oust Assad and is now trying to build a moderate Syrian opposition to fight IS.

Putin reiterated that it is up to the Syrian people to decide the fate of Assad, adding that Russia would not call on him to step down. But, he said Russia would urge Assad to work with a “healthy” opposition on political reforms.

“We are ready to work with the president to ensure a path towards political transition so as to move away from an armed confrontation. But that should not be done with the use of force from the outside,” he added.

On Iran, Putin said he believed world powers and the Islamic republic would soon sign an agreement curbing Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions.

“I think the signing should take place in the nearest future,” he said, adding that the implementation of an agreement would take about six months.

  1. I read a lot of double talk from Putin….sorry I try,but do not trust him. He has one eye fear of the Jews, in Russia, and abroad.
He could of done much more for Assad, and his support for long time Russian client Syria ,is far from passionate.
I have news for Putin, when Assad falls Russia is done in the Levant. I find is comments about Urban far from firm as well.
This man, must be on “somebodies”payroll ?
Stop thinking Vladimir Putin is the “savior”. With friends like him,who needs enemies?

  2. Saudi Arabia,or the Gulf States do not have, “Presidents for life”…they are run by Royal Families connected to Rothchilds. Assad is elected.
The West does not have, “Presidents for Life”…must set up elections, with actors working for the International Jews. ….look behind the scenes. Its not any ‘system”, but who controls the MONEY.

  3. I never trusted Vladimir Putin. Many say that he is a Jew. I don’t think he is a Jew, but he has been extremely cautious on touching the Jewish nerve. I agree with Dante Ardens, if Syria falls Iran will be next and then Russia and before they know China will be on her knees to the West. They better get together and stop these bullies who are provoking a nuclear war.

  4. Our Editor MG said it all in a previous post (Russian prosecutors raid second Jewish educational institution): “The Russians are playing a very sophisticated political game here and understand that at this moment there are absolutely no points to be scored by getting into circular discussions about what did or did not happen in the camps of WWII as well as any kind of extended, confusing discussions about various topics. Put simply, by virtue of the high-stakes, oftentimes complicated political maze through which all of this is taking place, Putin & co are not in the position of saying things that the rest of us are.”

  5. Russia is very vulnerable because of its low population density and huge unprotected land mass. That being said- does he think he can appease the western monster? He’d best preempt it from invasion, by any means necessary. Which would start with a mass mobilization in Syria to oust NATO death squads called ISIS. Once Syria falls? NATO will airlift the entire world’s prison and psycho population into the length and bredth of Russia. Syria has been holding the line for the world, against the start of WW3. Alone we may add. Putin (whose wife gave intv saying he’d been killed yrs ago and a body double is in his place) refused to release better arsenals to Syria- despite Syria already having paid for them yrs back. WHY would he do so? Russia is another fake opposition front, like the Bolsheviks. Pretending to hate western capitalism, but funded, armed, trained and created by those same banksters.
