Rose’s question was not the question of an idiot but of a skilled apparatchik betraying the American people. MG is right to stress the need to “pay close attention”.
If one does pay close attention throughout this 2:39 clip, one sees two things going on: a logical argument and an ongoing psychological war.
Charlie Rose was pretending to be sympathetic to the ordinary people of Syria, and to argue that the Assad government, now actively supported by Putin and Russia, are culpable for the immense suffering of Syrians. The mild mannered Rose thus delivered a vicious false accusation (bore false witness with malicious intent) looking oh so sad at it all.
I’m sure Rose understood Putin’s smile fully. Putin then proceeded to win the argument swiftly and neatly – and those able and willing to pay very close attention would have understood that clearly.
The most tragic aspect here is the likely number of ordinary Americans who are able and willing to pay close attention and think through what they see and hear. Many have the capacity to do so, but have apparently been disabled by fear. Fear can do that: it can paralyse a person’s ability to think.
People paralysed by fear – like the proverbial drowning man – are prone to catch at a straw. In this Rose-Putin exchange, Rose offered paralysed Americans a straw argument: that the war in Syria is totally the fault of Assad’s government, and now Putin’s Russia is making things even worse.
Putin clearly won the argument. Sadly, I doubt that any paralysed Americans would have noticed that.
How to free ordinary Americans from their paralysis?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for printing this! PBS has been getting on my nerves for sometime now. All one has to do is see the roster of foundations and individuals who are contributors to the programming. Then watch six hours of “how great Teddy, Eleanor and F.D.R. were”, a show on vaccines get one, get two, get twelve – it’s good for you and the children, Emma Goldman an hour long whitewash of this anarchist, then every April we get ‘Holocaust Remembrance Month’ – days of guilt, schmaltz, lies and recriminations.
I have never liked Charlie Rose as an interviewer – he’s a gusher and a fawner – worst of all just as his subject is getting to the interesting, relevant part of a discussion he interrupts them. Every day for the past two years he has been on in the afternoon trashing Putin, lying about Putin, maligning Putin. He has done this with dozens of guests from that French supposed intellectual Bernard-Levy, to General Hayden (hero of the NSA who likes to fumble through people’s underwear drawers), Victoria Nuland, Alan Dershowitz, Thomas Friedman – the whole cast of creeps, liars and self-promoters who are “Of The Tribe”(as is Charlie Rose)! Everything Putin did was wrong, nefarious, or calculated to start WWIII – from the supposed take over of the Ukraine, to the shoot down of the Malaysian plane, to Syria – even the Olympics got nothing but carping and criticism.
Wow watching ole Charlie have to interview a real human being for a change and getting his butt kicked in the process while he was shown up for the fool he is was like watching a priest pour holy water on a vampire. The writhing, screaming, smoke blowing off the flesh was the best television I have ever seen. Thank you PBS!

ed note–please compare this rational, logical man to ANY average politician (or even for that matter, to any average American) whose heart beats in perfect rhythm and syncopation with the drumbeat set by Israel and by organized Jewish interests in general.
Pay close attention to Putin’s smile at Rose’s idiotic question concerning ‘what Assad is doing to his people and to the refugees?’. Priceless.
