‘…Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. On the way they were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside.

When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” And the women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened…’

Mark, 16

ed note–however one perceives the events associated with this day, the bottom line of what it represents is that Jesus and His message are unstoppable. Whether one takes Resurrection Day literally or figuratively, the one thing all can take from it is that a monumental struggle that appeared to end with one group of criminals maneuvering the system at that time to their advantage failed, as 2,000 years later, the man they attempted to silence continues to speak to mankind even to this very day, even if somewhat muted.

  1. …But if it has been proclaimed that the Messiah has been raised from the dead, how is it that some of you are saying there is no such thing as a resurrection of the dead?  If there is no resurrection of the dead, then the Messiah has not been raised either;  and if the Messiah has not been raised, then what we have proclaimed is in vain; also your trust is in vain; furthermore, we are shown up as false witnesses for God in having testified that God raised up the Messiah, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised.

For if the dead are not raised, then the Messiah has not been raised either; and if the Messiah has not been raised, your trust is useless, and you are still in your sins.  Also, if this is the case, those who died in union with the Messiah are lost.  If it is only for this life that we have put our hope in the Messiah, we are more pitiable than anyone.

But the fact is that the Messiah has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have died.  For since death came through a man, also the resurrection of the dead has come through a man.  For just as in connection with Adam all die, so in connection with the Messiah all will be made alive… (Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians 15:12-22)
