Arms deal comes following Moscow’s reported agreement to deliver S-300 anti-aircraft batteries to Tehran on Thursday

Russia is set to supply several Sukhoi Su-30SM multi-role fighter jets to Iran as part of an arms deal between the two countries, a high-ranking official in the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation said Wednesday.

The Sukhoi Su-30SM, according to Sputnik, is capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground strikes and can be equipped with a wide variety of precision munitions.

According to the Russian news site Sputnik, a source in the Iranian Defense Ministry said the country’s Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan, who arrived Monday in Moscow, had planned to discuss the deal with Russian officials during his visit.

On Tuesday, Dehghan met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, and other officials.

Dehghan is set to take part on Thursday in a ceremony in Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea to mark the first delivery of Russian S-300 air defense system to Iran.

Iran and Russia have reinforced their military and nuclear cooperation since the signing in July of a landmark accord between Tehran and world powers over the Iranian nuclear program.

Russia has authorized the delivery of S-300 anti-aircraft batteries to Iran, despite the strong opposition of Western powers. Some Russian sources said the system could be delivered as early as Thursday, although the accuracy of the reports was unclear.

On November 23, Moscow lifted a ban on the sale and delivery of technological materiel tied to the nuclear industry after a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s leader Hassan Rouhani.

  1. So waging war is a profitable business for everyone. So now the Russians are making a meal of it too. And why cannot they says the Russians, USA, Britain, France and Isràel have done it the last decade, why can’t they? And who suffers? The poor innocent people. These power-hungry governments are so ruthless that if one supply the guns the other will supply the medicine. All make money from the wars. Whole economies of countries go bankrupt while corporates have trebled their profits, and they not shy to say that they have neither that their net-worth have trebled.

  2. This is the $150 billion we gave Iran. Now they’re buying fighter jets from Russia. (What dip shits we are) Was that $150 billion their own frozen
assets or was it our money? Do you know? You know there is so much money in the world for destruction. It’s too bad it isn’t used for good. I
know everyone thinks countries have to protect themselves. But I believe men like war. It is the ultimate control and power rush.

ed note–in the end, it does not matter. It is Iran’s money, money that has been frozen for years by the US and they have the right to do with it what they want, including buying weapons to defend themselves from Israel or whoever is planning to do to Iran what they have done to places like Gaza, Syria, Libya, Iraq, etc. And no, as man, I can tell you, it isn’t based upon some notion that ‘men like war’, but rather, that men are the natural force created by God who have been tasked with protecting women and children from their would-be murderers.

  3. #2 Carol Miller. We did not give any thing to Iran. Our government just released money that belong to Iran in the first place, money that was frozen, confiscated because of the Israel lobby in Congress. If you notice its Israel the principal instigator to punish Iran based on pure lies just like WMD in Iraq. While the “West” keep destroying countries and bombarding the hell out of many more. Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Uganda, Libya, Yemen, Syria, etc,, and how about the never ending occupation of Palestine?. All this destruction and killing of more than 10 million people for the sake of Greater Israel.
