US secretary of state says Trump’s recognition of the city as Israel’s capital did not prejudge its ‘final status’ or its borders
ed note–in the aftermath of Trump’s ‘declaration’ and the reaction on the part of all involved parties–whether celebrating it or (understandably) viscerally rejecting it–few (if indeed, any) have paid close attention to these very nuanced yet vitally important phrases in determining what this is/may be all about, and of all those nuanced phrases, the absence on the part of Trump, Inc in using the word ‘undivided’ and the fact that no ‘borders’ have been established or even intimated by his statement.
I/we won’t pretend to have an inside view as to what Trump’s end-game is here, but what we can do is comment on what the immediate effect of this latest ‘declaration’ is–Any and all screeching that Trump is a ‘neo-nazi’ and that he is ‘against the Jews’ has just been stopped dead in its tracks, similar in many respects to the effect that his bombing the (for-the-most-part empty) airfield in Syria did towards the charge that he was ‘Putin’s puppet’.
In such a way then, what Trump has done has been to purchase some political currency and credibility with the Jews in terms of his ‘bona fides’ prior to whatever he intends to do vis a vis the ‘ultimate’ peace deal with the Palestinians, and if indeed he does make the move towards the creation of some independent and sovereign ‘Palestinian state’, it is going to be a tough sell on the part of Judea, Inc that Trump is ‘anti Israel’ in the aftermath of him making such an historic declaration concerning Jerusalem as the ‘capital’ of the Jewish state.
what is also interesting is how tillerson is an essential, integral part of trump’s game book, he plays his part uncomplainingly because he is in on the final destination and as required plays the wingman or counterweight.
