The Catholic Church on Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of a landmark declaration by which it ended centuries of officially condoned anti-Semitism and urged bridge-building with all other faiths.
The document “Nostra Aetate” (Latin for “In Our Time”) most significantly repudiated the charge that all Jews should be held responsible for the death of Jesus.
Adopted on October 28, 1965 by Pope Paul VI at the end of the ground-breaking Second Vatican Council, the declaration was credited with revolutionising Catholic relations with Judaism.
“The Jews should not be presented as rejected or accursed by God,” the document said, insisting that Christians should decry “hatred, persecutions, displays of anti-Semitism directed against Jews at any time and by anyone”.
Pope Francis led a special audience to mark the date, stressing the document’s significance for all interfaith relations.
“Mutual respect is a condition of interreligious dialogue and at the same time its goal: respecting another’s right to life, to physical integrity, to fundamental freedoms — freedom of conscience, of thought, of expression and religion,” Francis said.
“The world looks to us believers, it urges us to collaborate with each other” on finding “effective answers to issues” such as “peace, hunger, the poverty which afflicts millions of people (and) the environmental crisis.”
‘Nothing short of a miracle’
Critics said “Nostra Aetate” did not go far enough to apologise for Christian persecution of Jews as so-called “Christ slayers” — a label that had fuelled anti-Semitism in Europe.
But experts say it did a great deal to expunge the “blood curse,” so-called because of a passage in the Bible in which Jews are portrayed despairing that Jesus’s “blood is on us and on our children.”
“What has happened since ‘Nostra Aetate’ is nothing short of a miracle,” Ronald Lauder, the president of the World Jewish Congress, said at a press conference in Rome, adding that 150 Jewish leaders had attended the papal audience.
“Relations between Catholics and Jews on many levels, not just the highest, are now better than ever.”
The document, adopted by cardinals and bishops around the world, also reached out to Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims.
The “mutual awareness, respect and esteem” on which the improved Christian-Jewish relations are founded “are worth just as much for relations with other religions. I think in particular for Muslims,” Francis said.

Pope Francis moved quickly after his election in 2013 to make overtures to Jews and Muslims, inviting two old friends from Buenos Aires — a rabbi and a Muslim professor — on a trip to the Middle East where he condemned religious hatred.
He was not the first pontiff to do so: John Paul II set up a series of interreligious meetings from 1986, which were taken up by his successor Benedict XVI, and saw atheists join the roundtable too.
All three — John Paul II, Benedict and Francis — have prayed with imams in mosques. But the Catholic Church has found it harder to bridge differences with Islam than with Judaism.
Benedict XVI angered the Muslim world with a speech in 2006 in which he appeared to endorse the view that Islam is inherently violent, sparking deadly protests in several countries as well as attacks on Christians.
Since then the Vatican’s pontifical council for interreligious dialogue has been working overtime to mend fences with moderate Islam — a task made no easier by the rise of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
Francis’s suggestion at the end of last year that Muslims were not doing enough to counter terrorism was feared to have increased tensions between the West and Islam, though supporters said he was right to speak out.
“Violence and terrorism have bred an attitude of suspicion or even condemnation of religions,” he said on Wednesday.
“In fact, although no religion is immune from the risk of fundamentalist or extremist deviations in individuals or groups, we need to look at the positive values that they live by and offer, and which are sources of hope,” he said.

You put on righteousness. Putting on a shawl, or saying God’s name in Hebrew or
blowing a horn will put you back under legalism of the law as the Jews tried
doing with new converts. Legalism and judging is Satan’s devices and it also is a
form of sorcery (Deuteronomy 18:10-15). You now are modern Israel not biblical
Israel. You now are spiritual Israel. Romans 2:28,29. Genesis 12:4. Not physical
circumcision but now spiritual circumcision.
Putting yourself under legalism takes you away from the great commission to
tell others about Jesus Christ. It takes America away from a righteous
government and places a dual covenant for others. Which today is called
Christian Zionism. It blinds one into believing that physical Israel can do no
wrong even if physical attacks and murders others. We then support evil.
Amos 5:15; “Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the
gate: it may be that the LORD GOD of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of
Joseph.”
Evil will always find a way back to legalism as it did from the cross on. Acts 15:5-
11/Galatians 2, saw Christians wanting circumcision back in as physical
salvation. Hebrew spoken as salvation (Acts 2) but these people didn’t hear
Hebrew but in their own language.
These are burdens. Matthew 11:30/Nahum 1:13 tells us to quit putting these
burdens back on. They have become a form of sorcery and Satan’s devices.

Far be it for me to question a decision, of a part time, short term, elected Pope, who has not kept the faith with God, or stayed informed about current events and the happenings involving the lies, deceit and deception, death and destruction committed by the jews, for just the last hundred years.
A true follower of Christ, would never dare to make such a declaration in Gods house, especially knowing what I have learned about the people, who the Pope is asking god and we the people, to forgive, which amounts to a litaney of ongoing crimes against Humanity and mother earth. This pope is either a fool, a lying psychopath, or a deciple of satan. He certainly does not speak for me, or my God.
Glory be to God, praise the Lord. I will not, nor would my God, legitimize, legalize or sanctify, the mass murder of his creation, the pillaging and plundering of the earth, and such Blasphamy and despicable conduct of the jew, evangelicals, or other false, wanna be idol worshiping prophets, who have the gaul, to assume that they can take His place. This Pope is an impostor, a fake, a phony, a servant of satan.
God never chose the jew, as a chosen people to inherit the earth, he chose to drive them out, they have never learned their lesson. This phony pope needs to be cast out, and god needs our help to do it. The time has come for people to show their faith, and rise up.
We are all aware of the problems that were created when putting the jews in charge of anything, it is not a good plan. Look at what they have done to Gaza, the middle east, the USS Liberty, Russia, all of Europe the same fate awaits the people of North America.
