It looked a street in the small regional city in Australia where I live – and just like any suburb in any city in America – and to a greater or lesser extent all around our brave and free and democratic New World. What can one do? Laugh, weep, throw up, bang one’s head against the nearest wall? Or calm down – as best one can – and start thinking: where are we at; how can ordinary people get organized; was Jonathan Swift’s Lilliput intended as a clue? 1. our capacity for sympathy/compassion;
2. our capacity for reason;
3. our conscience – our sense of right and wrong – exercised by means of our capacities for compassion and reason.
There is another holy trinity. Unless we can make full use of those sacred human capacities, we are destined for terrible times. Look at all the sign posts: Palestine, Ukraine, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc, etc, etc!
The greatest challenge is: how to integrate the disintegrated. Ordinary people everywhere are disintegrated – chaotic rabbles of confused and frightened people who have no basis for mutual trust with each other.
