JERUSALEM POST – A Romanian watchdog group on anti-Semitism said it was worried by the mayoral candidacy of a Bucharest politician who said local Jews lied for money about the number of their brethren killed in the Holocaust.

Marian Munteanu of the National Liberal Party, Romania’s second largest, made the accusation in a press statement he co-signed in 1994, when he was part of the Christian-nationalist Movement for Romania organization.

Jewish groups put the number of Romanians killed in the Holocaust at 420,000 to “obtain illicit moneys from Romanian people through disinformation and manipulation of public opinion, with the complicity of treacherous elements who infiltrated the Romanian institutional structures,” the statement read, the online edition of Evenimentul Zilei reported on Thursday.

The Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of Holocaust warned that Munteanu “presents a concern” not only because of his nationalist rhetoric and “statements minimizing or denying” the Holocaust, but also for “misrepresenting” reality today, according to the Agerpres news website.

The institute cited an April 13 statement by Munteanu, who, in criticizing legislation from last year which proscribes anti-Semitic speech and Holocaust denial, said the law itself was anti-Semitic because it singles out Jews.

In Romania, he said, “there is hardly anti-Semitism, rather xenophobia. We are all philo-Semites because we are Christians.”

Romania, where Jews were killed during World War II by troops loyal to Ion Antonescu, Adolf Hitler’s ally, has seen numerous cases of Holocaust denial, including in academia and government.

In 2012, a politician who denied that Jews had suffered in Romania during the Holocaust was appointed to a ministerial post despite protests by Jewish groups. The politician, Dan Sova, later apologized and said his statement was the result of ignorance.

A few months later, a Romanian member of the European Parliament denied the Holocaust on television. The following year, a prominent historian said it was a “huge lie” that large numbers of Jews were killed in areas under Romanian control during the Holocaust, leading to his firing from a teaching post at a German university.

Also that year, a Romanian state television channel was fined for broadcasting a Christmas carol celebrating the burning of Jews.

  1. Romania’s reputation just went up a notch or two in my estimation. Of course, these are also excellent reasons for its marginalization here in the West……. Romania is one of the nations historically most plagued by Jewish White slavers. It was one of the popular places for young Jewish pimps to lure naive women for deportation to South America as far back as the early 1800’s.

  2. The Romanians will never learn because anti-semitism is deeply ingrained in them. Who do they think they are? Everybody pays Holocaust compensations and they think they are special and can be excused? Their nerve is all the more amazing given the fact that Elie Wiesel set up his Institute for Holocaust Studies there (the Romanian government subsidizes it) and is keeping an eye on them. Laudably it is the only country in Europe that passed not one but two successive legislative acts that punish Holocaust denial. Wiesel was not pleased with the first, so the Romanian parliament in its wisdom passed a second, with more “teeth.” This is due to the fact that Romania has finally embarked on the path to democracy. It is a member of NATO and also has two US military bases to defend it from Russia’s aggression and even an Iranian attack. In fact the Romanian would do well to remember their ancestors’ fears of Darius’ armies, those awesome archers whose arrows struck so far.
The Romanians need to purge themselves of anti-semitism — the ugliest form of racism– and continue following directions from their betters to achieve full democracy, which means no tolerance for incitement to hate.

  3. Like every other article, they just keep rambling off accusations and ignoring the fact that they have been caught lying repeatedly. Of course they lied and inflated the figures and they’ve already admitted doing that in Poland when they officially downgraded their claim on the number killed at Auschwitz from four million to one million, even replacing the sign there with the new figure, still without a shred of proof to back up their new claim.

I hope more Romanians and other Europeans speak out against Jewish lies, atrocity propaganda and racism towards Europeans.

  4. absolutley jews have proof of 6 milllion
