Supreme leader says even if Tehran agreed to every demand, world powers would not keep their end of the bargain

ed note–this was precisely the theme I discussed in the various speeches and interviews I did while in Iran last week–that the entire ‘nuclear’ issue was just a red herring, that what was really at issue was overturning the successful revolution of 1979 and that the West would never concede to Iranian sovereignty.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Wednesday that even if Tehran accepted every demand put forth by world powers in nuclear negotiations, the West would never lift sanctions.

“[The world powers’] main goal of such measures (sanctions) is humiliation of the Iranian nation and stopping the nation and the Islamic Republic’s great move towards a new Islamic civilization,” he said, according to Fars News.

“I believe that even if we accept the demands that they (want to) dictate to us in the nuclear issue, the sanctions will not be removed,” he added during an address to visiting Iranians from East Azerbaijan.

Khamenei went on to accuse the West of plotting against Iran to prevent it from becoming an economic superpower, thwarting potential economic cooperation with other countries and keeping it dependent on oil.

“If the country’s economic basis is planned and strengthened based on using people’s capacities and domestic production, we will never mourn or grow concerned over sanctions and reduction in oil prices,” he said.

Khamenei’s remarks came as US and Iranian delegations were set to meet Thursday for another round of nuclear talks in Geneva. The sides are working on setting a political framework for a deal by the March 31 target date, with the final technical details to be laid out in a comprehensive accord by June 30.

Disagreements in the talks center on the extent of nuclear activities Iran will be allowed to continue and the timetable for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear efforts.

Earlier this month, Khamenei said Iran would never agree to a bad deal with the world powers but said a nuclear agreement was possible.

“I agree with an agreement if it can be struck, but I disagree with a bad agreement,” he said.

“The contents of such a contract should be transparent, clear and not open to interpretation. The contents of the agreement should not allow the other side which is used to bargaining to seek excuses on different issues,” he added.

  1. The statement by Mr. Khamenei is absolutely 300% true. “..if the economic basis is planed” and “..domestic production..” In other words an inland economy using perhaps some barter for absolutely essential imports. The sanctions are to keep Iran from advancing its society. But on the path of self sufficiency they will eventually become meaningless, and Iran will sore way beyond ever possible without such sanctions, embargoes and political boycotts in place because of the syphoning off wealth through international high-finance will be more than made up. This was btw the path Germany took and did very well. But then the world-enemy instigated a war of annihilation including burn sacrifices as their last option. And they would certainly do the same again against a sovereign, self sufficient Iranian nation. A valiant resistance is better more honorable than becoming a slave allowed to survive with a little liberty.

  2. No country can achieve first-world infrastructure without nuclear technology. Everything from medicine (isotopes) to meeting energy demands depends on it. Israel wants Iran crushed, to be poor and fragmented, because It’s Iran that’s frustrating Israeli expansionism.

  3. Correct in what you all say.

Khamenei need not worry overmuch, as it’s sinking in with the Europeans that the US is definitely not their friend, as it was consciously planned to allow as much of Europe to be turned into a battleground as would have been necessary consequent upon Putin ordering Russian military might into eastern Ukraine, thus justifying the US sought after NATO response, and, of course, with all necessary US materiel support, but not with US ground nor air nor naval forces.

Now that the usurper Kiev regime of Poroshenko and Yatsenyuk is all but done – with the Europeans having Putin’s masterful restraint to thank, and for the flow on effect of Europe not being devastated like it was twice in the past 100yrs.

Europeans will now have closer ties with Russia than before, and Iran too, as they will disregard the US mandated sanctions on both.

As I said, Khamenei need not worry, as things will be on the up and up for Russia, Europe and Iran, with the US and Israel withering from the conscious isolation by civilised parts of the world.
