Buenos Aires Herald

Israeli newspaper Haaretz has published an article questioning the criminal accusation filed by late AMIA prosecutor Alberto Nisman against President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and Foreign minister Héctor Timerman, while asserting that the official’s handling of the case was far from exemplary.

The article, written by Graciela Mochkofsky, explains some of the background to the 1994 bombing and its subsequent investigation, as well as charting Nisman’s rise in the Prosecutor’s Office. Mochkofsky also asserts that outside perceptions of the issue are at odds with the reality of the case.

“It is widely believed, particularly outside Argentina, that special prosecutor Alberto Nisman died because he was about to expose a criminal pact between President Cristina Kirchner and the Iranian government to cover up the latter’s responsibility in the 1994 bombing of Buenos Aires’s Jewish community center. According to this riveting version of events, powerful forces — most likely the government he was accusing, perhaps Iran — murdered Nisman to keep him silent”, the article begins, before claiming that this idea was discredited by judge Daniel Rafeca’s rejection of the complaint.

“His 63-page dismissal is devastating: Not only was there “not even circumstantial evidence” of the alleged cover-up or obstruction of justice in Nisman’s last document, the judge wrote, but the evidence gathered by Nisman himself openly contradicted his accusations,” Mochkofsky continues.

The writer affirms that the prosecutor, found dead in his Puerto Madero apartment in January after filing the complaint, was “known among his colleagues for his close ties to Argentina’s intelligence services. The services have long been involved in political espionage, financing of political campaigns, bribing of judges and lawmakers, and every dirty operation you can imagine.”

After surviving the scandal which followed the collapse of the AMIA trial in 2004, Mochkofsky explains, Nisman was subsequently appointed as lead investigator by former President Néstor Kirchner.

“In 2006, based mostly on foreign intelligence reports, Nisman accused the Iranians of sponsoring the attack, allegedly carried out by Hezbollah militants.

In the following years, the Kirchners firmly supported these allegations, accusing Iran in international forums.”

But the breaking point, according to the author, came with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013 between Argentina and Iran. Mochkofsky suggests that Nisman followed the example set elsewhere in rejecting the pact and dissenting from the government line.

“According to diplomatic cables made public by WikiLeaks in 2010, Nisman had sought the approval of America’s embassy in Buenos Aires before making any move in the case. When the Israeli and the American governments rejected the memorandum between Argentina and Iran, Nisman did, too”, she asserts.

The article also comments on prosecutor Gerardo Pollicita’s entry into the case, as well as several contradictions in the accusation against CFK and Timerman which were documented in what the writer calls a “devastating” 63-page dismissal presented by judge Rafecas.

  1. VENEZUELA UPDATES

    ENABLING ACT RENEWED

Last Sunday (15 March 2015) Venezuela’s parliament renewed the Enabling Act for the rest of 2015.

This will let Maduro continue to defend Venezuela’s people against attacks from the USA and from Venezuela’s upper class.

In response, opposition members of the National Assembly (who represent the rich) gave angry speeches, saying Maduro was trying to distract Venezuelans from economic problems, including acute shortages (caused by the rich).

Both the government and the oligarchs are preparing for a vote later in the year to elect a new National Assembly. The date has not yet been set.

    VENEZUELA SEEKS LOANS

Venezuela’s central bank is in talks with Wall Street banks (e.g. Bank of America and Credit Suisse), to get a loan of 1.5 billion dollars by the end of April.

As collateral, Venezuela’s central bank will pledge 1.4 million troy ounces (51.4 US tons) of Venezuelan gold.

    SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS

Cuba and the USA have held two rounds of talks aimed at normalizing relations. A third round began yesterday, 16 March 2015.

The plan is to announce the opening of their respective embassies in Washington and Havana before or during the next Summit of the Americas, which will be April 10 and 11 in Panama.

Such summits take place every three or four years. The coming summit will include Cuba for the first time since the Summits began in 1994.

The USA will use the coming Summit to celebrate the U.S.-Cuba reconciliation. Hundreds of journalists will take photos of Obama embracing Raul Castro, signifying another US victory over Latin America.

However Obama soured the planned festivities on 9 March 2015 when he issued an executive order ordering financial sanctions on seven Venezuelan officials and former officials, and declaring that Venezuela poses “an unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security.

Maduro and his allies will ask for a summit declaration — or at least a statement by a group of countries — condemning U.S. aggression.

  2. Thanks for sharing Konrad. This whole charade is getting to be a joke. You believe Maduro is seeking a loan with Wall Street? UNASUR condemned the imperialist. Summit coming up and Obama wants to smell worse than he is. I hope they give him a spin. He wants that embassy badly. He wants to stick that knife in deeper.

  3. “You believe Maduro is seeking a loan with Wall Street?”

He’s seeking a simple bank loan. Venezuela needs US dollars in order to by imports, since international sellers want to be paid in US dollars. Therefore Maduro’s representatives are talking to outfits like Bank of America, seeking a loan. No bonds, no derivatives, no fancy terms. Just a loan.

This is necessary. And the big banks will go for it, because if they don’t, then some other big player like HSBC will step in and take the deal.

Oil prices went back up to $62.96 per barrel on Feb 17, stayed there for ten days, and then started falling again. They are now at $54.00 a barrel.

    Anything under $100.00 hurts Venezuela.

  4. Thanks Konrad. I feel really bad for everyone who is affected by this madness. Well, you said Maduro needs American dollars. I guess asking for loans won’t be sanctioned. Hypocrisy. Obama is a gangster, regardless of jewish involvement. He looks just like them. He has bought Cuba and Venezuela to their knees as much as they are resisting. I have no kind thoughts or words about the pimp in the house. He sold us all and that is still not enough. The bigger they are the harder they fall. Looking forward to that crash.

  5. @ lasilenca:

Just to be clear, Venezuela’s government needs to borrow dollars, but it can no longer borrow dollars by selling sovereign bonds, since the ultra-corrupt ratings agencies have arbitrarily downgraded Venezuela’s bonds to junk status, as part of the war on Venezuela.

This means that Venezuela’s government can still borrow dollars by selling bonds, but must pay ruinously high interest rates. Therefore Venezuela’s government will seek simple loans from banks (denominated in dollars) using some of Venezuela’s gold as collateral. No big deal.

On a different note, you say that Obama is a gangster, regardless of Jewish involvement. Yes indeed. Obama is more evil than all the Jew-loving Republicans, because Obama is a neo-liberal globalist. I have thought of writing blog posts explaining how neo-liberalism has reduced Honduras and Japan to nightmares, but I doubt that anyone at TUT would be interested. And now Obama wants to do the same thing to Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela.

Trust me: all this Republican squawking, and all this silliness in Israel, is nothing. Obama has more power, because billions (or trillions) of dollars are riding on the Iran Deal and the Cuba Deal.

The ass-kissing Republicans are pathetic clowns. They are nothing more than trained seals.

Obama, by contrast, is pure evil.

  6. Konrad: I understand what you mean about Venezuela, etc.

Please do write a blog on neo-liberalism. I would read it and understand better. You would be surprised as to how many people would read it too. Obama is pure evil. There is nothing good in this man’s being. You can’t change a Leopard’s spots. He is playing gangster games. It doesn’t take a genius to see he is pimping everyone along, simply because he can, just like a jew.
