CNN says political tension between Israel and UNESCO has prevented preservation at Jerusalem site

American television channel CNN listed Jerusalem’s Dome of the Rock at the number one spot in a list it published this week of “25 magnificent buildings on the verge of extinction.”

“No other site has spent more time on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger – the Old City of Jerusalem has held a spot since 1982. A holy city for three different religions, it attracts millions of tourists with over 200 monuments, including the majestic Dome of the Rock,” CNN wrote.

“But political tension has hardened relations between Israel and UNESCO, preventing any preservation plans from moving forward,” CNN continued when describing why the site was chosen to be included in the list.

The Dome of the Rock, located on what Jews call Temple Mount, is a constant point of contention and is regularly the site of violence.

Jewish and Christian visitors were permitted to enter the Dome of the Rock, Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Islamic Museum up until 2000, when the second intifada broke out.

Between 2000 and 2003, Israel barred Jews and tourists from the Temple Mount completely, reopening the site in August 2003. The decision to re-admit non-Muslims was met with resistance from both Jordan and the Waqf. Clashes between Jewish visitors and Muslim activists have regularly taken place since then.

Non-Muslim visits to Al-Aqsa complex are permitted and regulated by police, but Jews are not allowed to pray at the site for fear it could trigger major disturbances, nor do they enter the mosques there.
