Mark Glenn frequently equivocates on the word “Torah”. From your article:
For clarification, by the word “Torah,” I do not just mean the Torah, as in the Five Books of Moses, but to all Jewish religious texts such the Hebrew Bible, rabbinic and halakhic texts, and kabbalistic and hasidic texts.
The question of this man’s definition of “Torah” superseding the Christian Old Testament (as the New Testament supersedes the Old Testament to Christians) is then debatable.
I myself have no particular dog in this fight but it’s obvious that MG pigeon-holes Jews into his conception of “Torah”. Most Jews are atheists. Being Jewish is more of a tribal syndicate of self-worshipers (or make themselves, as a people, their own messiah) as far as I can tell. What any Jew (or Christian) today thinks of, say Deuteronomy, might not be as important as you make out. Although I suppose it very well might for SOME.
ed note–Jews being ‘religious’ or atheist means nothing. The mindset and behavior that inevitably descend from the teachings of the Torah, Talmud, Kabbala, whatever, are manifest regardless of whether someone does it because he/she believes that Yahweh told him/her to do it or whether it is done for cultural reasons.
The point I was making is that there are far too many people in this ‘movement’ passing themselves off as experts on this subject who make the false claim that the Jews abandoned their Torah (which they also claim to be the word of God) some 1500 years ago and ‘replaced’ it with the talmud, and as is evidenced on a daily basis if one merely reads the Jewish press, this is simply not the case at all.
“it is the equivalent of a winning lottery ticket that never expires”
And now, the Catholics who think the menorah-whipped Francis is a Christian believe it too.
He said that God’s covenant with the Jews was never cancelled. It is still valid.
@ Blake: You make a reductive summary of Mark’s (and I daresay TUT’s) take on the Torah. I think it is useful and correct to think of the Torah as the font, the cornerstone, of Judaism and the Talmud as its Users’ Manual.
I agree with you that there are Jews who are for all practical purposes atheists. But their rejection of Judaism as a religion is highly selective: they don’t believe in burning bushes, parting of the sea but they do believe they hail from Canaan — “their” land; they believe that Jews have suffered like nobody’s business solely because “anti-semitism” is inherent in the envious Goyim, and they believe themselves to be superior to “nations” (quote Nobel Prize Laureates here). So for all practical purposes all those who self-identfy as Jews ARE Jews because Judaism has seeped deeply into their worldview, identity, and ethics and they will always behave as Jews: self-segregated from the nation they should be part of, contemptuous of and hostile to it.
