Frau Ursula Haverbeck, born in 1928, is an 86 year old survivor of the genocidal Allied terror bombing, of Germany’s Eastern frontier, the anti-German pogroms and expulsions, and the post-war Morgenthau Plan of mass starvation perpetrated against Germany, the enslavement and mass murder of surrendered German soldiers as well as, of the post-war cultural genocide of the German nation by the criminal victors.
On November 20th, 2014, Frau Haverbeck made history by laying criminal charges against the Central Council of the Jews in Germany, under S. 344 of German Penal Code with “False Prosecutions” perpetrated against innocent Germans concerning their “denial of the holocaust” (TM). The crime of False Prosecution is punishable with up to 10 years imprisonment.

Frau Haverbeck is an exception. On 6 Oct 2010 a Munich court sentenced her to six months in prison, suspended, plus a fine of 1,000 euros, for having distributed truth pamphlets at schools. She appealed to the federal court, which rejected her appeal.
George Wiesholler, 91, was also convicted by the court of aiding and abetting hoax ™ denial, as he had allowed the material to be distributed with his name as the publisher.

The Winter War of 1939-1940 between Finland and the Soviet Union is to this day is one of the most mysterious and not fully studied episodes in the history of the 20th century.
“An Unnecessary War” – says Peter Iiskola, who is a Finnish international lawyer, a former diplomat at the Council of Europe, the UN. He is convinced that under certain conditions this war could have been avoided. But what kind of conditions, who should have prevented the fighting and why did they not prevent?
– Winter War was extremely contradictory and ambiguous. Today some historians rank it to the Second World War, while others considered it to be separate bilateral local conflict. And what is the point of you, Peter? What was the war?
– In my opinion, both of these positions are right. From a military point of view, it was a separate conflict because Germany attacked the Soviet Union only 15 months after the Winter War in June 1941. However, in a broad sense, Winter War can be considered a part of World War II.

I want to note that the conflict between Finland and the Soviet Union in 1939 was also the first of the three wars that the Finns fought from 1939 to 1945. The second war was the Soviet-Finnish War 1941 – 1944 years, hereinafter referred to as the Finnish historiography says the “Continuation War”. And finally, the third war was when Finland conducted military operations against Germany – a Lapland War in 1944-1945.
And what of these wars was the most horrible and cruel?
– In all three wars the tiny Finland suffered irreparable losses, because at that time the country had a population less than four million people. In the Winter War Finland lost 26,662 soldiers and 956 civilians as dead; in the Soviet-Finnish war 1941 – 1944 the number of casualties (dead and wounded) amounted to 225.000; while the Lapland war claimed 4.000 casualties.

– It is claimed that Stalin in 1939 wanted to annex the whole of Finland, but it’s just an unsubstantiated statement. And I do not believe in it. Why would he have to start an unnecessarily expensive and risky occupation? The annexation of all Finland would have significantly complicated the life of the USSR, creating tension on the north-western borders and automatically pulling in “chips” for an inevitable war with neighboring Sweden. But let the politicians and historians argue …
-The Winter War was a clash between the Soviet Union and Finland. USSR tried for years before the war persuade the Finns to make a barter of some territories for the national and territorial interests of the USSR on the eve of a new world war, but Finland consistently refused to compromise. This led to the collision.
When the Winter War ended with the signing of the Moscow Treaty on 12 March 1940, the USSR took precisely those areas that it had been claiming, and not more. It was the Karelian Isthmus and West Karelia, Lapland (Old Salla), islands in the eastern Gulf of Finland (Hogland). As a result of this war, the Soviet Union took about 40 thousand square kilometers of the Finnish territories. Looking ahead, I will say that these areas were subsequently re-occupied Finland in 1941, in the early stages of World War II, and in 1944 they again went back to the USSR.
But Moscow peace did not last long – only 15 months – until the USSR was attacked by the Germans with their plan “Barbarossa”. A few days the Soviet-Finnish war broke out. Germany supported Finland, considering the latter as one of its major bridgeheads on the north against the Soviet Union.
Germany carried out military cooperation with Finland and provided Finland with financial support until the Soviet-Finnish armistice in 1944. According to a new peace treaty all the areas conquered by the Soviet Union during the Winter War went back to USSR again. Finland also pledged to move away from its territory (mainly from Lapland) the former allies, the German troops. But Finnish troops were met with stiff resistance from the part of the Nazis. Thus began the Lapland War.
– And what was the main result of this whole campaign 1939 – 1945 specifically for Finland?
– As a result of these wars, Finland lost not only part of the population and also territories, but remained independent. And this last one, I believe is the most important thing.
– At the time of the Winter War the Finnish propaganda portrayed the war as defensive. Propaganda said that the Finns defended their country from the cruel and implacable invaders. What was actually this war for Finland?
– Of course, for the tiny Finland it was a desperate step to fight against the huge USSR. Here I recall the biblical David and Goliath. The Soviet Union at that time had no choice but to take military action, because the Finns refused to recognize Moscow’s interests in the north-western region. However, in contrast to the biblical story, David did not defeat Goliath – Finland did not win the war, although it was able to partly stop Goliath.
But Goliath, in turn, could not be triumphant against David.
As strange as it may sound, but the Winter War did end well for both parties. Finland, despite many losses, retained its independence, and USSR, despite the no less terrible sacrifices, received the necessary territory.
– But the Soviet Union is still inevitably portrayed in this war as an aggressor. The Soviet was even expelled from the League of Nations for alleged attack on Finland in 1939. Can we definitely consider USSR to be the aggressor in this conflict? Who really started the war?
– This was part of a global battle between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Or do you mean, who threw the first stone? This depends on how you argue: you can say it in a simple way, in a philistine way, or in the broad mindful way. If in a simple way, the Soviet Union was the aggressor. And that’s a fact. But, let’s be smarter and look deeper.
Tiny Finland refused to provide security guarantees to the USSR its north-western borders. Finland refused territorial barter and get a result that both could live with. Finland made an unforgivable diplomatic and strategic mistake, which led to the Winter War. Hence, the reason here is not only and not so much just aggression from the Soviet Union.
And who threw the first stone, in fact, does not matter.
We should remember that the Soviet Union in the 1930s did repeatedly offer Finland to sign for territorial barter transactions mainly for the security of the Leningrad region. The Soviet Union was afraid of German expansionism and did prepare for it.
The “Anschluss” of Austria in March 1938 and the attack on Poland on 1 September 1939, which happened just a week after the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact – all this made the Soviet Union to think about the defense of its borders. But Finland did refuse all USSR offers.
Even before the German invasion of Poland, Chairman of the Finnish Defense Council, General Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was willing to agree with the majority of the Soviet demands. He understood that to ignore them would even be more so a failure and make war inevitable. The same understood also the Finnish Ambassador in Moscow, Mr. Juho Kusti Paasikivi, who later was the President of Finland in 1946-56. However, the Finnish government was before the Winter War for the most part totally against the Soviet proposals. This position became personified by the Finnish Foreign Minister Eljas Erkko, who was an owner of the newspaper «Helsingin Sanomat», which even after decades maintained its hostility toward Russia. The Minister Erkko, who was partly educated in the United States, was convinced that the Soviet Union was bluffing by putting forward territorial claims in 1939. But history has proven him to have been deeply mistaken.
Subsequently, even the Paasikivi as president of Finland, openly called Winter War “War of Erkko.”
I am sure that Finland could have with skillful diplomacy and politics avoided this war, as well as Finland’s subsequent participation in World War II on the side of Hitler in 1941-1944.
In my opinion, Finland made the wrong choice in principle, waiving the requirements of Moscow. This diplomatic bug in the Finnish leadership was the main reason for that the conflict erupted later.
– Does this mean that the Soviet Union had no expansionist intentions with respect to Finland?
– Let’s think logically. Finland won its first autonomy by joining up with the Russian Empire in 1809, and before that Finland was merely a simple Swedish province. Then in 1917, Finland gained and completed its full independence from Russia. Given all this, it would be strange to think that the Soviet Union, allegedly filled with anger, wanted to destroy or to annex Finland, instead of simply implement a strategic exchange of land, which could protect Leningrad from the approaching enemy from the West.
– And how did Finland develop within the Russian Empire?
– When the Winter War began, Finland was a young nation-state, and regardless of its long history, it had existed at that time only for 21 year. The Finns had a long and rich history, but all these values were previously levelled under the Swedish rule. For more than 600 years of Swedish rule until 1809, the Finnish language and traditions were oppressed. In all the wars of Sweden, it is said the Sweden always “fought to the last Finn”: the Finns tended to be used as “cannon fodder”.
When Finland became an autonomous part of the Russian Empire, the culture literally blossomed. The Finnish language climbed up from the oppressed Swedish period to such a high level. In the horizon “loomed” Elias Lönnrot with his famous Finnish-Karelian epos “Kalevala” and the founder of modern Finnish literature Alexis Kivi. These climbing stars would definitely not have been allowed under the rule of Sweden.
When the period of the Swedish rule was over in Finland and the area became part of the Russian Empire, Elias Lönnrot wrote – “Suomi (Finnish word for Finland) emerged from the gloom of the night.”
Indeed, the “Russian Tsar” autonomy in Finland was not only words but also deeds. Alexander II was very popular among Finns, and he revived the Finnish language. With his reign the Finns got its own currency, the coat of arms, postage stamps, and the army; and finally there were local authorities, various local government agencies, schools, railways built, development of industry, trade and navigation. For all of these blessings the Swedes, of course, did not like Alexander II.
The Bolshevik revolution in 1917 gave the Finns their lucky chance to become independent on 6 December 1917. Vladimir Lenin was the first to recognize the legality of the separation of Finland from the Russian Empire or Russia/USSR.
But in the same period, the young republic was plunged into “civil war” that lasted here from 27 January 27 to 15 May 1918. “Reds” were supported the Bolsheviks, while “Whites” received help from the German Empire. In the end, “Whites”, led by former Lieutenant General Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim of the Russian Imperial Army, won this civil war.
– Let’s go back to the evaluation of the Winter War, by our contemporaries. Why do the majority of Finns today blame Soviet Union for the attack against their country in 1939 and none seem to remember that during World War II, Finland fought on the side of Hitler?
– I think that these opinions are there, first of all, because the Soviet Union really attacked Finland without a declaration of war. In addition, it seem to be convenient to forget about the own strategic errors and faults before the outbreak of the conflict.
Plus, in this war, unlike World War II, there were only two members. And inevitably one will blame the other.
– And how modern Finns rate this war today. What do they say about this?
– Many Finns think: tiny David did not defeat Goliath, but survived!
This war is, of course, described by the Finns as “terrible.” My aunt was a teenager when Soviet planes attacked the Helsinki at the beginning of the Winter War. My grandfather never said a bad word about the Russian.
– How is the Winter War reflected in contemporary relations between Russia and Finland?
– This conflict should, first of all, teach Finland not to repeat old mistakes. Finns have to realize that they have a neighbor which is not the worst, just Russians – and that Finland also has its own national interests to protect.
Experience from the Winter War show us what cost sometimes have to be paid for mistakes.
I sincerely hope that the current government of Finland will think with its own head and not be longing for anything more. Tensions can be avoided if Finland does not join NATO, when 70% of the population in Finland is opposing NATO.
Although there are today fears that Finland can simply be dragged into a war against Russia. Then of course, Finland would again make a big strategic mistake.
Finland should only trust its own people and not allow solving its problems through relationships to other EU countries or USA. This is perhaps the best guarantee for the continuation of peace, prosperity and mutual understanding between Russia and Finland.
