Historical note…
The web site “MySpace” (started in 2003) became so popular that Rupert Murdoch bought it for $580 million in July 2005. Meanwhile the US government recognized MySpace as a great way to monitor what the peasants were thinking. The government (NSA, etc) wanted to modify MySpace to make it even easier for government voyeurs to mine data. However Rupert Murdoch was already rich, and already had a huge media empire to run. He was aged 74, and was not interested in handing over control of MySpace to the US government.
Therefore the government approached Zuckerberg et.al. about building a competitor to MySpace that would let the government spy on the peasants as never before. Zuckerberg had already started Facebook in 2004, but with the help of the US government, Facebook surpassed MySpace, and today has 864 million active daily users (all of them being spied on), whereas MySpace has less than a million members.
By “spied on,” I mean computers sift for key words while using complex algorithms and statistical analyses to see what the peasants are thinking. This information is sold to big corporations, which use it to crush smaller competitors. (The “free market” in action). The information is also use to root out and destroy “terrorists” (i.e. any peasant who dares to challenge the plutocracy).
