Donald Trump would make “a terrible nominee and a terrible president” — and The Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol said Wednesday that he would rather have Hillary Clinton in the White House than the Republican front-runner.
“You have to beat him in Florida and Ohio, the first two winner-take-all states,” Kristol told “Morning Joe” on MSNBC. “There has to be a de facto agreement between the opposition candidates — between the resistance to Trump, which I am proud to be a part of — because I think he’d be a terrible nominee and a terrible president.”
Kristol said the best way to stop Trump, who won seven states on Super Tuesday, was through a brokered Republican Party convention in Cleveland in July.
Party officials would seek to deprive Trump of the 50 percent of delegates needed to win the nomination, Kristol said, therefore granting the prize to an “acceptable” candidate.
“We have to stop the momentum,” he said, acknowledging that this move would most likely lead dissatisfied Trump voters to stay home — guaranteeing the nomination to Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio.
“The truth is if Trump doesn’t win Florida and Ohio, it remains very much of an open race,” Kristol said, later adding that under the brokered scheme, Trump “would still lose the election — and shouldn’t win the election.”
